The First Breath of Fresh Air: My Journey Back to the World
My name is Taysean Rowland, and on September 6, 2024, I took my first steps as a free man after ten long years behind bars. Walking out of those gates was a moment I had dreamed about for a decade, yet the reality of it felt both familiar and completely alien. To be honest, I was terrified. Prison has a way of changing a man in ways that are hard to describe to those who haven't lived it. It hardens your spirit and makes you cynical because, inside those walls, negativity is the very air you breathe. It seeps into your bones until you forget what it feels like to trust or to hope.
But something shifted in me during the last three months of my sentence. I was introduced to a program that started to chip away at that hardened exterior I had built to protect myself. It’s hard to overstate the impact it had on my mental state while I was still sitting in a cell. It forced me to stop running and finally confront my demons, looking honestly at the choices that landed me in prison in the first place. More than just reflection, it showed me that there was actually another way to live a positive path forward that I hadn't been able to see before. It felt like a true blessing, giving me something solid to cling to in an environment designed to make you give up.
The real transformation truly took root when the program connected me with a life coach. Even now, months after my release, he continues to be a rock for me in a world that often feels overwhelming. Just talking to him and feeling his positive energy makes a world of difference when the weight of the transition feels too heavy. He’s helped me more than he probably knows, simply by being there to listen and offer steady guidance. When you’ve been locked up for so long, it is incredibly easy to fall back into old, comfortable patterns, but he keeps me grounded and reminds me of the man I am becoming.
One of the most vital things my coach has done is help me move past vague ideas about a better future and start setting concrete, achievable goals. He holds me accountable every single day, making sure I stay focused even when things get difficult or confusing. In this new life, distractions are everywhere, and it is so tempting to revert to what I used to know, even if that’s exactly what got me in trouble before. My coach refuses to let me go backward. He pushes me to keep moving, to keep growing, and to keep my eyes on the horizon.
I carry an incredible amount of gratitude for this program and for the man who has walked beside me as my coach. They didn't just give me advice; they gave me a real chance to build a life I can be proud of. This isn't just about me anymore; it's about my family and being the man they deserve. That is what drives me now. I am determined to make the most of this second chance, and I know deep down I couldn't have made it this far without that support, that motivation, and the belief that a brighter future was actually possible for someone like me.
As a quick update, Taysean has been doing better than ever since writing this post. He has moved into a beautiful house, become a committed and engaged father, and has recently launched a new nonprofit dedicated to empowering young men to become the best versions of themselves.
