Sacramento State’s Reintegration Academy helps formerly incarcerated individuals transition back into society.
Sacramento State is hosting its first Reintegration Academy, an eight-week program designed to help formerly incarcerated individuals transition back into society. The classes will bring formerly incarcerated people to Sacramento State and UC Davis to provide them career guidance, life skills and resources.
Friday night, nearly 40 people attended the first session led by Michelle Sotelo.
“When you show people that there are organizations that will help in a system and they learn how to navigate it, it’s a game changer,” said Sotelo.
The course includes lessons on resume building, financial literacy and personal development.
Louis Laporte, a 28-year-old participant, hopes the program will help him overcome the barriers formerly incarcerated people face after prison.
“I was just interested in coming here and being a part of this,” said Laporte. “Just trying to turn my life around.”
The program will culminate in a job fair connecting participants with local employers and resources.
This is the first of six academies planned for the year.
“It’s important to know that everybody deserves second chances,” said Sotelo.
